Nursultan Nazarbayev — the First President of Kazakhstan and the Leader of the Nation, was elected on December 1, 1991 at the first general elections. Personality of Nursultan Nazarbayev marks a whole epoch in the life of the country.
Every state in its history is committed to the attainment of independence and the opportunity to pass their own development path. The Republic of Kazakhstan on the threshold of the 1990s was in a difficult position. The lack of clear prospects, collapse of the economy and the political system – were the first thing that our citizens were facing in these difficult times. It was the role and qualities of the First President that were crucial for how soon the country will pass a turning point and make independent steps to prosperity.
A sound policy and the nature of the Leader have led the economy of Kazakhstan to the status of one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Due to the personal contribution of the First President and strong popular support in the world community «Kazakhstan model of development» has received a wide recognition. It is a model of gradual and confident development of the state on the thought-out course.
We have built good relations with all countries of the world and preserved peace in multinational Kazakhstan. Chairmanship of the OSCE, the Winter Asian Games, the implementation of industrial and innovation program, the construction of Astana, EXPO – 2017 in Kazakhstan, economy recovery, unquestioning authority of the country in the international arena — all these important achievements were realized by the leadership of the First President of Kazakhstan.
The Foundation of the First President was established in 2000 under the personal initiative of the President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Today, the Foundation proudly implements ideas of the President aimed at improving the competitiveness of human capital and the creation of a new generation of Kazakhstanis.
Nursultan Nazarbayev was born on July 6, 1940 in the village of Chemolgan of Kaskelen district of Almaty region in the family of Abish and Alzhan Nazarbayev.
Nursultan Nazarbayev and his wife Sara Nazarbayeva have 3 daughers.
In 1960-1969 N. Nazarbayev worked at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant.
In 1967 he graduated from the higher technical educational school at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant.
N. Nazarbayev was the exemplary production worker and was greatly respected among the colleagues. New perspectives opened up for the future President so N. Nazarbayev started his party and social activity in 1969.
1969-1973 — in the Party and Komsomol blocks in Temirtau, Karaganda region.
1973-1977 — the Party Secretary of the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant.
1977-1979 — Secretary, Second secretary of Karaganda regional party committee.
1979-1984 — the Secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan.
1984-1989 — Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR.
1989-1991 — the First secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan. At the same time in February-April, 1990 — Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR.
On April 24, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR established the office of the President of the Kazakh SSR. Nursultan Nazarbayev was elected as the first president in the history of Kazakhstan at the Supreme Council session.
Since 1990 – worked as the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On December 1, 1991, the first general elections of the President of the Republic were held in which N.A. Nazarbayev received the support of 98.7 percent of voters.
On April 29, 1995 through the people’s referendum, the presidential term was extended to 2000.
On January 10, 1999 he was elected the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on an alternative basis being supported by 79.78 percent of voters.
On December 4, 2005 N. Nazarbayev was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan by receiving 91.15 percent of votes.
On June 14, 2010 N. Nazarbayev was formally granted the status of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan — Leader of the Nation, according to the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan «On amendments and additions to some constitutional laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan on improvement of legislation in the sphere of activity of the First President of Kazakhstan — Leader of the Nation »
On April 3, 2011 he was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan receiving 95.5 percent of votes.
In the elections held on April 26, 2015, N.Nazarbayev has won by receiving 97.75 percent of votes.

The award for peace without nuclear weapons and global security was established by the head of state N. Nazarbayev in 2017.
This prize is awarded to:
– For outstanding contribution to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament, reduction and destruction of nuclear stockpiles, cessation of nuclear tests, use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes;
– For active work aimed at strengthening peace and friendship, mutual trust between peoples, equality and equal security in interstate relations.
For the first time the Nazarbayev’s Prize “For Peace Without Nuclear Weapons and Global Security” was presented to the King of Jordan, Abdullah II. November 1, 2017, the presentation took place in during the official visit of the King to Kazakhstan. The head of state N. Nazarbayev highly appreciated the activities of King Abdullah II.
- This award is recognition of your merits and a hope that in the conditions of conflicts you will continue to play a peacekeeping role that brings peoples together. Your country also takes an active part in the Astana process. Jordan has accepted more than one million Syrian refugees, you are providing financial and humanitarian assistance to Syria. I think that the whole world should appreciate this”, the Head of State said.
In turn, the King of Jordan has especially noted the confidential nature of the existing relations between the two countries and pointed to the important role of Nursultan Nazarbayev in the peaceful settlement of international conflicts.
